The Pocono Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains, specifically part of the Appalachian Plateau.  They encompass about 2500 square miles with thier highest elevation at just under 2700 feet.  The area has several major rivers including the Delaware, Lehigh, Lackawanna, and about 150 lakes.  The area includes the counties of Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne.

Located within a few hours of both the New Yourk City Metropolitan Area and the Philadephia Metropolitain Area,  the Pocono Mountains is a destinations for many people who wish to take a break for the busy city life. Recreation in the area includes many outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, biking, camping, hunting, and fishing.  Recently the area has also become home to several casinos.
